Meet the Team

Eve Wening

President

Hi, my name is Eve, and I’m one of the three candidates for Junior Caucus President. During the past two years I have become deeply involved and invested in the Stuyvesant Community, both as Vice President of the Freshman and Sophomore Caucuses and as a member of Girls Varsity Soccer, Basketball and Softball. My position on Caucus has been incredibly formative and I appreciate every moment of it. Not only have I gotten the opportunity to meet so many hard-working, brilliant people in our grade, but I’ve been able to work with many of our school’s most impressive student organizations and the administrators that make Stuyvesant what it is.

I am so proud of the work we have done in these past years, and our whole team has learned so many important lessons and skills. Although we have had several successful events, I want to push us to new levels in the coming year, especially with Junior Prom next spring! The relationships that we have developed with the administration in the past two years will allow us to make more progress in terms of policy change than any other ticket, and our extensive knowledge of Stuyvesant’s political system is invaluable. I know that Zeynep and I have the dedication and experience to serve this grade as well as you all deserve, and I hope to have that honor once again.

Zeynep Bromberg

Vice President

My name is Zeynep Bromberg and I would be incredibly honored to be the class of 2020's Junior Caucus Vice President!

At Stuyvesant, I've been a passionate member of STC, SING!, the Student Union, and the JSU. Outside of Stuy, I work at an organization called the Greenhouse, a community for teen-led social justice, as well as at the Museum of Jewish Heritage. I love to read, sing, eat, crochet, bake, and obsessively binge watch competition shows on Netflix.

As both a Freshman and Sophomore, I've been on the respective Departments of Event Planning and was the co-director of the department for the Sophomore Caucus. I got the opportunity to work closely with Eve to plan events and initiatives such as the Sophfrosh snowball and Boo Grams: it's been an absolute pleasure! She's a natural leader and truly works for every single person in our grade. When Eve asked me to run as her VP, I was ecstatic. I can't think of a better way to serve my class then by heading the Junior Caucus with her.

Debi Saha

Campaign Manager

Hi, I’m Debi! So far at Stuy, I have participated in SING! as coordinator, and have founded my own club, the Stuyvesant Legal Society. In the last year, I’ve seen Eve and Zeynep work hard to make our lives as sophomores easier and more fulfilling. Whether it be Eve coming up with ideas as Vice President or Zeynep putting together events as the director of Event Planning for Sophomore Caucus, I have the utmost confidence that Eve and Zeynep will not fail in stepping up to the plate as Junior Caucus President and Vice President. It is an honor to be a part of a campaign that relentlessly supports the student body.

Ben Shpetner

Campaign Manager

Over the last two years, I have had the pleasure of working alongside both Eve and Zeynep to help make Stuyvesant better not just for our own grade, but for everyone. I am a member of the Congressional Debate team, as well as Director of Finance for Sophomore Caucus. During my tenure, we ran popular and profitable events, and I have experienced firsthand how hardworking and motivated Eve and Zeynep are. I think they represent by far the most experienced and competent ticket for the Junior Caucus election. Under their leadership, you can expect another great year full of successful events and initiatives to help make Stuyvesant a better place.

Suzanna Yang

Campaign Manager

I'm Suzanna, one of the managers of this campaign. I am a dancer on Stuy Urban and I partook in many shows, such as Stuy Squad and Sing! I am currently working as an intern in the Columbia lab to research the effect of sodium influx on atrial fibrillation. I have also participated in math team and Science Olympiad.

I strongly believe in Zeynep and Eve's ability to represent our voice as students of the class of 2020. I have worked with them in the past and they are passionate about making decisions that will better our experiences at Stuy. They are both extremely accomplished and have what it takes to establish change. Our team features a diverse group of students, which allows us to look at different areas of concerns with new perspectives.

Cosmo Coen

Campaign Manager

Hi! I'm Cosmo. I have chosen to support Zeynep and Eve as they are 100% committed to making the life of each and every student better and are completely capable of doing so. Eve has already done an incredible job as Vice President of the Freshman and Sophomore Caucuses. As a member of STC and SING! for the past two years, I have had the absolute pleasure of working very closely with Zeynep and I know that she is one of the most driven and competent people I know. Together, they make a team that is unstoppable, filled with great events and great communication. Eve and Zeynep constitute by far the most reliable ticket for the Junior Caucus, and I’m so excited to work with them in the coming weeks!

Fahim Rahman

Campaign Manager

Hey, I’m Fahim. Coming to Stuy I didn’t know what to think about this place. But as the months passed, I met many friends and made some amazing connections. I’ve had the pleasure to work as a graphic designer for clubs, events, and more. The many opportunities at stuy such as SING! and Sophomore Caucus allowed me to become much more active in the Stuyvesant Community. Through this, I met Eve and Zeynep, two of the most hardworking individuals at Stuy. Not only do I believe in their platform, I also believe in their passion for the Stuyvesant Community and that they will work tirelessly to improve this place we call home.

Our goals

Our platform

Increased Diversity

Over the past two years, the Freshman and Sophomore Caucuses have had over 60 unique members, many of whom were committed since Day 1. The loyalty and experience of these members has been pivotal to our success, but we are always looking to diversify and create an even more representative body. We will structure applications and interviews in a way that not only motivates new members to apply, but values equally the experience of a returning member with the diversity of opinions and skills of a new applicant.

Transparency

As your President and Vice President our main priority will be to service the grade, and in order to do so we will continue to establish an open and informative relationship with the student body. Not only will we increase the number of regular updates that we release, but we will create a blind application process and make sure that we are on the same page with the grade’s wishes through regular polls and google forms.

Events

As Sophomores we were able to not only fight for old traditions such as the Snowball and the Semi-Formal, but create successful new initiatives such as Boo-grams. As Juniors we would have a new set of responsibilities, such as J-Prom, Career Day, and PTC bake sales, but we will also continue events like Boo-grams and create new ones such as Movie Night and test prep sessions.

Beautifying Our Building

Despite our impressive building and gorgeous views, at times the drab teal walls and doors of Stuyvesant make it look a little bit like a 70’s mental institution. This winter the Sophomore Caucus painted a beautiful sunflower mural on the Sophomore Bar, and in the coming year we will look to expand this project and beautify other areas of the school! These large displays of student artwork will not only showcase the amazing talent within our student body, but will brighten everyone’s mood as they go about their day!

Sponsorships

In the past two years we have been very successful in earning amazing sponsorships that support our dances and events. Not only have we developed relationships with local businesses such as Insomnia Cookies, Dirty Bird, Shake Shack, and the Brookfield Ice Rink, but we have found wonderful resources in the parental body and companies that give very helpful monetary donations. We have created a successful department solely for seeking out such sponsorships, and looking into next year we will use the skills we learned as well as the many connections we have developed in order to better finance J-Prom and the other events we have planned.

Academic Support

We understand the stress that Junior Year brings, and as your Caucus it would be our highest priority to make this year as enjoyable and successful as possible. To that measure we will work towards gaining new sponsorship opportunities for testing materials and partnerships with tutoring companies that could offer free or reduced sessions for Stuyvesant students.

PSAL

We plan to continue our efforts to establish a gym free for all students who are PSAL athletes. Over the past year our team has been compiling data surrounding the number of PSAL students in gym classes, and their views on these frees. The consensus is clear: PSAL frees would provide a much needed and much appreciated extra period to rest or do work for our hard-working student athletes. Our team has attended every SLT (Student Leadership Team) meeting this year, and have brought this idea to the table many times. We also have ongoing discussions with several administrators on this point and look forward to pursuing it to the final steps in the coming year. This year, and the past few months especially, have shown this to be a viable policy change, and we are committed to seeing it through.

Gym Uniforms

The school-mandated gym uniforms can be uncomfortable, itchy, and downright unattractive. For many students who can’t or don’t want to wear shorts, the only alternative are thick sweatpants. The material and style of these uniforms is not conducive to athletic activity, and the comfort of our peers is our utmost priority. For the coming year we have plans to establish approved brands/styles as a step towards greater options for all students.

Entering School Earlier During Frees

Currently, once we have left the building for their frees or lunch periods, students are not allowed to reenter until five minutes before the warning bell rings. This is highly inconvenient for many students, as sit-down restaurants and cafes tend to be significantly more expensive in the Tribeca area. Although the park can be a beautiful place to eat out, during the colder months it’s simply impossible, and there is no good alternative for students who just want to buy a sandwich to eat in the cafeteria. We propose a policy that would allow students to enter twenty minutes before the warning bell, allowing them time to eat food from outside.

Cell Phones

The cell phone policy at Stuy has historically been a point of contention in all Student Union campaigns. In addition to continuing the fight for increased locations where cell phones can be used in the building, we also plan to work towards a more reasonable policy of cell phone recovery. This would involve having students being able to volunteer (such as in a school lab) in exchange for getting confiscated phones taken away rather than requiring parents to come in, which is often highly inconvenient for many families.

Homeroom Representatives

Our Homeroom representative policy has been well-received despite being implemented half way through the year. In order to keep all homerooms up to date and provide a clear representative figure for the whole grade we will implement this policy in the coming year.

Escalator Monitoring System

Our IT department is in the process of prototyping an effective Escalator Monitoring System. While it is still in its beta stages, it is fully functional and we plan to have it accessible to the whole Stuyvesant student body as soon as possible! This system provides an efficient way to keep track of what escalators are or aren’t working on any given day. This prior knowledge will help to prevent frustration and unnecessary hallway traffic on a daily basis!
